Holy Wednesday

“Who paint dos pictures?”

“My daughter.” I don’t look up. I am studying irregular French verbs. I am trying hard to step up my game. I am pretty sure the woman next door, with the beautiful silver hair, is a francophone. If I get a chance to meet her maybe I can make a bit of conversation in French.

“She got talent.”

“Uh huh.”

“Mice dun look at de painting too much.”

“Why is that?”

“Colour blind, man.”

I look up.

“You see in black and white?” He’s on the top of the sofa staring at a triptych that is among my favorites of my daughter’s work.

“No. I can see some faint colour. But I dun see red. Whatever dat is. Also, I gotta be up close to see good.”

“Well, those three have quite a subdued palette with very little red. So, you’re probably not missing much.”

He is sitting absolutely still.

“I tink I like things what are beautiful. I never knew dat before.”

Perhaps our visit to L’Oratoire Saint-Joseph has stimulated Thierry’s aesthetic sensibilities.

“Help me with these verbs and I’ll take you to Le Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal tomorrow.”

He stands and turns. “Vraiment?”

“We can go after my class. One condition. You help me with these verbs.” I hold up my Bescherelle. He slumps.

“You know I kenna read.”

“Frère André couldn’t read before he became a monk.”

He perks up. “C’est vrai?”

“Not until he was in his twenties. He was such a sickly kid he scarcely went to school. The brothers of his order taught him.”

He nods. He’s thinking. Is it possible Frère André has inspired him?

“You ken teach me?”

“C’est ce que je fais.”

He hops down from the sofa and joins me at the table.

“D’accord.” He stops. “But we not readin’ no Bible.”

“Hell no!”
